ARTIST NOTE: Charles Ethan Porter (c. 1847–1923) was one of the first African American artists to gain recognition for still life painting. Trained at the National Academy of Design and later studying in Paris, Porter specialized in richly detailed depictions of fruit and flowers—subjects rarely taken up by Black artists of his time. Working primarily in Connecticut, he brought sensitivity and technical precision to everyday objects, challenging the racial and artistic limitations of the 19th century art world.
