Artist Note: Edward Mitchell Bannister (c.1828–1901) was a self-taught Canadian-born African American painter who became one of the most respected landscape artists of his time. After moving to New England, he won national acclaim in 1876 for Under the Oaks, making him one of the first Black artists in the U.S. to receive such recognition. His work often reflects a deep love for nature’s quiet moods, rendered in soft light and thoughtful color. Bannister helped to shape the art community in Providence, Rhode Island, cofounding the Providence Art Club and serving on the board of the Rhode Island School of Design.
