ARTIST NOTE: Laura Wheeler Waring was known for painting Black women from all walks of life, often in ways that moved beyond class expectations and pushed back against the narrow stereotypes of her time. Portraits like this helped secure Waring’s place as one of the leading Black female painters of the Harlem Renaissance, celebrated for the dignity and modernity she brought to her subjects.
