ARTIST NOTE: Aaron Douglas, often called the father of Black American art, was known for his striking blend of modernism, African-inspired design, and bold graphic silhouettes. His illustration “Mulatto”, shown here, was publish on the cover of a Black academic and literary journal of the era and reflects the themes he returned to throughout the Harlem Renaissance: identity, heritage, and the tension created by a society built on racial hierarchy. Douglas used sharp contrasts, symbolic figures, and rhythmic shapes to explore the lived realities of Black Americans. His work helped shape a new visual identity that spoke directly to Black history and the complexities of the Black American experience.
