SUBJECT NOTE: James “Jem” Wharton was one of early nineteenth-century Britain’s most celebrated Black boxers, known for his undefeated record and commanding presence in the ring. Born in London to a Black father and Irish mother, he built a career that defied the racial expectations of his time. William Daniels’s portrait shows Wharton at the height of his fame, capturing him not only as a skilled fighter but also as a charismatic public figure whose success opened doors for future generations of Black athletes.
