SUBJECT NOTE: Born in New York City, Ira Aldridge was the first American actor to achieve international acclaim. After early work with the African Grove Theatre, he left the U.S. at seventeen and built his career across Europe, overcoming racist backlash in London to become a celebrated Shakespearean performer. Promoting himself as “The African Tragedian,” and claiming descent from a Senegalese prince, he made Othello his signature role, but also performed others including Shylock, Macbeth and Richard III. By the 1850s, he was a star in Russia, France and Poland, but unexpectedly passed away while preparing for a long-awaited American tour.
