SUBJECT NOTE: Yarrow Mamout was allegedly 140 years old when Charles Willson Peale painted his portrait in 1819. (In actuality, Yarrow was only about 83 at the time.) A formerly enslaved Muslim man from Guinea in West Africa, literate in Arabic, Yarrow had earned his freedom, owned a home in Georgetown, and even held bank stock. Peale, then 77 himself, admired Yarrow’s resilience in the face of racism and saw in him the qualities he believed led to long life: industry, moderation, and resourcefulness. The portrait, is one of the earliest known images of a Black Muslim American—and a rare glimpse of religious and cultural diversity in early America.
