SUBJECT NOTE: Dom Miguel de Castro was an ambassador from the Kongo province of Soyo, sent in 1642 to Dutch Brazil to strengthen political ties in an effort to assert independence from Kongo and resist Portuguese influence in Central Africa. Painted during his official visit, he’s shown here in the dress of a Dutch official. The portrait is one of a triptych that was part of a gift from Dutch Brazil’s governor-general Johann Moritz to the Danish king Frederick III as a token of diplomacy.
