SUBJECT NOTE: Fanny Eaton was born in Jamaica in 1835 and moved to London with her mother in the 1840s. Of African and Chinese descent, she lived and worked in the city as a domestic servant while raising ten children with her husband, James Eaton. To support her family, she also modeled for artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, including Simeon Solomon, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Joanna Mary Wells. Her striking features and quiet presence appear in biblical, allegorical, and historical scenes—rare and often overlooked glimpses of a Black woman in Victorian art.
