SUBJECT NOTE: The Savoy Ballroom opened in Harlem in 1926 and became a landmark of Black dance culture. Known as “The Home of Happy Feet,” it was one of the first integrated ballrooms in the U.S. and the birthplace of the Lindy Hop. Dancers like Frankie Manning and Norma Miller, along with bands led by Chick Webb and Ella Fitzgerald, made the Savoy a center of innovation, community, and style until its closure in 1958.
