SUBJECT NOTE: Olaudah Equiano (whom historians believe this may be a portrait of) was born in present-day Nigeria in 1745 and was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a child. After enduring the Middle Passage, he was trafficked through the Caribbean and British colonies before purchasing his freedom in 1766. Settling in London, he became a prominent abolitionist, writer, and public speaker. His 1789 autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, was a powerful firsthand account of slavery and freedom, widely read across Britain and influential in the movement to end the transatlantic slave trade. Equiano’s life and words remain a foundational part of Black British history.
