SUBJECT NOTE: Charles Spurgeon Johnson was a pioneering sociologist, educator, and key intellectual force behind the Harlem Renaissance. Born in 1893, he was the first Black president of Fisk University and a leading voice on issues of race, labor, and social reform in the early 20th century. As editor of Opportunity magazine, Johnson nurtured emerging Black writers and artists while also conducting influential research on racial violence and segregation in the U.S. His work blended scholarship with activism, helping lay the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement.
