SUBJECT NOTE: Countee Cullen was a leading poet of the Harlem Renaissance, known for his elegant verse and classical style. Born in 1903 and raised in Harlem, he explored themes of race, love, and identity, often blending traditional poetic forms with pointed social commentary. His 1925 debut collection, Color, established him as a major literary voice of his time. Cullen also worked as a teacher, editor, and children’s book author until his death in 1946.
