SUBJECT NOTE: Paul Robeson was a renowned singer, actor, and activist whose powerful bass voice and commanding presence made him an international star in the early 20th century. Born in 1898 in Princeton, New Jersey, he gained fame for his performances in Show Boat and Othello, while also using his platform to speak out against racism, colonialism, and injustice around the world. Blacklisted during the McCarthy era for his political beliefs, Robeson remained a symbol of artistic excellence and unwavering commitment to civil rights until his death in 1976.
