SUBJECT NOTE: Alima S’Nabou was a young girl from the village of Igbobé, Nigeria. At just 10 or 11 years old, she served as an interpreter on a French expedition through the Niger and Congo regions, thanks to her fluency in French, English, and local languages. In 1892, she was brought to Paris by the explorer Louis Mizon, where this portrait was painted and she briefly became a minor celebrity. The last known mention of her comes from Mizon, who wrote in September of 1893 that he “dropped S’Nabou at the Catholic mission at Onitsha, where she gave birth to a boy of light complexion.” She would have only been around 13 or 14 years old at that time.
