SUBJECT NOTE: Juan de Pareja was born in southern Spain and spent over two decades enslaved in the household and studio of Diego Velázquez. This portrait was painted while Pareja was taken on a trip with Velázquez to Rome in 1650. Praised at the time for its lifelike quality, the painting is also a record of the widespread, often overlooked reliance on enslaved labor in the European art world. Pareja was formally freed four years later and went on to establish himself as a successful painter in Madrid.
