SUBJECT NOTE: Miss La La, born Anna Albertine Olga Brown in 1858, was a Black acrobat known for her extraordinary strength and daring performances. She rose to fame at Paris’s Cirque Fernando, where she performed the “Iron Jaw” act—suspending her entire body high above the audience using only a leather mouthpiece clamped between her teeth. In this painting, Degas captures that exact moment, lifting us into the rafters with her. She was one of the few Black performers working the 19th-century European circus circut.
