SUBJECT NOTE: Laure, a young woman of Antillean descent, lived just steps from Manet’s studio and modeled for him several times. She appears most famously as the servant in his painting “Olympia”, but also as a nanny in “Children in the Tuileries Gardens“, and in this portrait painted the same year as Olympia. Long mistaken for a preparatory sketch, this work is now recognized as a portrait in its own right—a rare, unidealized glimpse of a Black woman in 19th-century Paris.
