SUBJECT NOTE: Sultan Abdul Karem was the only person of African descent Edvard Munch ever painted. Likely brought to Europe through the German-run Hagenbeck Circus, he may have come from a former German colony such as present-day Tanzania, Namibia, or Ethiopia. In 1916, he performed in Oslo as part of a staged act featuring “primitive peoples,” designed to cater to European fascination with the so-called exotic. In total, Munch made seven oil paintings and one lithograph of Sultan Abdul Karem.
