SUBJECT NOTE: Aïcha Goblet, born Madeleine Julie Goblet, was a French-Algerian dancer and model who made a name for herself in 1920s Paris under the single name Aïcha. A fixture of the city’s bohemian and artistic circles, she performed and posed at a time when Orientalist fantasies and modernist experimentation collided. Her carefully crafted image—equal parts invention and performance—captivated painters, photographers, and audiences alike.
