SUBJECT NOTE: Toussaint L’Ouverture was the brilliant and unyielding leader of the Haitian Revolution—the first successful slave uprising in the Americas and the birth of the world’s first Black republic. Born enslaved, he rose through sheer force of will, strategy, and intellect to become a general and statesman, outmaneuvering both Napoleon’s army and the colonial order. Though he died in a French prison before Haiti achieved full independence, his legacy endures in every echo of that hard-won freedom.
