SUBJECT NOTE: Henry Ossawa Tanner’s mother, Sarah Elizabeth Miller, was one of eleven children born to an enslaved woman who sent her children to north to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Sarah was placed with a family in Pittsburgh by members of the Pennsylvania Abolitionist Society. In this portrait, Tanner captures not just her likeness, but the strength and quiet dignity of a woman who had come through hardship and raised a family rooted in education, faith, and purpose. He kept the painting as part of his personal collection and wrote of it fondly in letters home.
