SUBJECT NOTE: This is the only known portrait of a Black man in early European painting. He may have served at the Brussels court of Emperor Charles V, who counted a Black archer named Christophle le More among his bodyguards. The badge on his cap—a token of the Virgin—is likely a keepsake from a pilgrimage to Halle in Brabant, a popular destination for those tied to the Brussels court.
