SUBJECT NOTE: This portrait captures the profile of a Gnawi man from Marrakech, a member of the Gnawa brotherhood—descendants of West Africans brought to Morocco generations ago. Known for their healing ceremonies rooted in music, rhythm, and ritual, the Gnawa have been part of medina life since at least the 17th century. Tapiró’s work at the time was unique in that instead of romanticizing his subjects in the popular “oriental” style like the previous generation, he chose to portray real people and showcase the beauty of their culture.
