SUBJECT NOTE: This portrait by Black artist Laura Wheeler Waring is one her most celebrated works, depicting Anna Washington Derry, a laundress and community matriarch from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Derry was part of a small free Black community that had settled there via the Underground Railroad. Unlike many of Waring’s other sitters, who were from middle or upper-class backgrounds, Derry’s portrayal of a working-class woman is unique and shows her deep respect Derry. Acclaimed not only in Philadelphia, this painting also earned Waring the prestigious Harmon Foundation award, further establishing her importance as a Black portrait painter during the Harlem Renaissance.
