SUBJECT NOTE: SUBJECT NOTE: Pedro Sunda was one of two attendants who traveled from the Kingdom of Soyo to Dutch Brazil in the 1640s. He appears here in formal dress, holding an elephant tusk. The portrait is one of a triptych that was part of a gift from Dutch Brazil’s governor-general Johann Moritz to the Danish king Frederick III as a token of diplomacy.
