SUBJECT NOTE: Sarah Tanner was the heart of her prominent African American family, and here, her son honors her steady presence while also marking a turning point in his artistic journey—one shaped by persistence, talent, and though they were initially opposed to his artistic pursuits, gradually won his family’s support. The composition is a reference to another famous work of art, “Whistler’s Mother” by the painter James McNeill Whistler.
