SUBJECT NOTE: According to local lore, the boy in this portrait crossed the Atlantic as a stowaway and ended up on the doorstep of Liverpool’s Monument Hotel, where he caught the eye of Pre-Raphaelite painter William Windus. Later, a relative happened to see the finished portrait in a frame-maker’s window and helped reunite the boy with his parents. True or not, it’s definitely a great story.
