SUBJECT NOTE: Dred Scott was an enslaved man who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom—and that of his wife and daughters—after living in a free territory for four years. His case made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled 7-2 in 1857 that Black people “had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” The decision denied citizenship, and therefore the ability to bring any suit in federal court, to all African Americans, free or enslaved, and helped push the nation closer to civil war. Scott’s courage in pursuing justice, even in the face of devastating loss, remains a powerful testament to resistance and resolve.
