SUBJECT NOTE: Thomas Waterman Wood painted “Market Woman” during a trip to Havana in the late 1850s. His subject—a Black Cuban street vendor—is part of a long tradition of Afro-Cuban women, both enslaved and free, who made their living in the city’s open-air markets. At the time, it was rare for an American painter to depict everyday Black life with this kind of dignity and attention. Paintings like this one made a statement: that her humanity was worth seeing, and worth painting.
