Fall is finally here and that means cozy candles and blazing hearth fires season has officially begun! However, both of those items require one other element – matches.
And, up until recently, to find any matches in our house you’d have to spend several minutes digging in a junk drawer or searching the living room for “that place I’ll surely remember I tucked the box of matches away”.
Then I discovered STICKER BACKED STRIKER PAPER and my house has never been the same.
No vessel is safe.
Have a cute old bottle you adore? Fill that bad boy with matches and stick some striker paper under the cork. Instant DIY match holder.

Have a fun little tea light candle holder that’s the perfect shade of green? Matches in, striker paper on the bottom, set on fireplace mantel.

Want to always have a match on hand in the bathroom for those candlelit baths you take? (Or maybe to light that scented candle that lives in your guest bathroom…for…reasons…) Fill a vintage powder puff container with matches and, you guessed it, STRIKER PAPER on the inside of the lid.

Has creating these little thrifted diy match holders become my entire personality? Maybe. But I don’t care because I never have to search for matches anymore which means more cozy candle time and more blazing hearth fires this fall and I’m all for that.
Supplies You Need To Create Your Own DIY Match Holder:
I think we’ve established you can use WHATEVER vessel you want. I usually thrift mine because I’m me and I enjoy thrifting. But you could totally do this with ANY vessel you fall in love with and won’t mind sitting out in the space you intend it for. I’ll link to some ready buy vessel options at the bottom of this post if you’re interested.
After that, the main star ingredient you need to pull this magic together is sticker backed striker paper. You can get two different kinds.
- Full Sheet Sticker Backed Striker Paper (This is the same one I used)
- Full sheets are great for cutting out unusual or custom shapes you may need for your vessel
- Pre-Cut Sticker Backed Striker Circles & Strips (Comes in different sizes!)
- These make things even easier by removing the cutting step. Just peel off the page and stick on the bottom (or side) of your vessel.

HOT TIP: These make REALLY GOOD housewarming gifts. Fill them with some nice matches, pair with a great candle and you have the perfect little gift! I’ve also seen people make them as wedding favors!
Shop The Look Instead
Too busy to make your own and just want to purchase a cute match holder instead to save yourself some time? Here’s a round up of some of my favorites that are available for purchase. There is a *very wide range of price points here*, but some of these more expensive options would make the perfect gift for that friend or family member who already has *everything*. (NOTE: Some of these containers will only work with “strike anywhere matches” and not your standard safety matches. So be aware.)

Alternatively, if you don’t have the time to go thrifting and are just looking for a great vessel to hold your matches and are ok applying your own striker sticker to said vessel: here are some containers I found online that I think would be so perfect for crafting your own DIY match holders.

And finally, if you have a cute match holder you might also want some fancy matches to go with it! As I mentioned in my note above, some of the match holders I’ve linked to above require a special type of match called “strike anywhere matches”. You can easily tell if a match is the “strike anywhere” variety because it will have a white dot on the tip of the match. There are some strike anywhere matches available to purchase online, but shipping them is expensive which raises the cost (they have to be shipped as hazardous material due to their ability to, well, ignite during shipping). I will link to some here but you are likely going to have more luck buying these in person at your local Ace Hardware, Walmart, Cabelas, Academy Sport (etc). The DIY match holders I made all work with standard safety matches (which require striker paper) and are what you’ll find most easily when shopping for matches in person or online.
